I'm sure everyone on Fixed Gear Republic has friends that don't ride fixed gear bikes and ask you why you ride with one gear that is fixed. We thought it would be cool to hear the reasons why you ride fixed.

So... why do you ride fixed?

i ride fixed because it brings me back to when i was a lil kid on a schwinn... one gear, no hand brakes. just ride, cruise around, go fast, have fun. no cable, shifters, or brakes to mess with. its as simple as you can get on two wheels
I love the aesthetics and the simplicity of a fixed gear. Plus with only one gear you're forced to gut out the hills. Not to mention it's counter culture to the bike snobs with their dainty little outfits.
I ride my fixed gear bike because I love the way it feels when I'm speeding past all the cars on the street. I love when my eyes start to tear up because I'm cutting through the wind. I love the way it makes me feel so much more involved in the act of riding a bicycle. I love how you have to look more than a block ahead to keep from getting killed, and the extra strength to get up hills and to get down hills. And for these reasons I feel empowered and free when I ride fixed.
its fun it makes u think and to be more aware
i ride fixed because a freewheel robs you of your dexterity
I have to say riding and racing Fixed Gear is truly a way to be one with mechanics,From the moment I get on my bike and put toes in straps oh man seriously its exactly like Avatar. i get to peddling and can feel every pebble in the road and feel so in control of the ride experience. When I first started riding I got it I knew what this was really about and as time has gone on i went from thinking I was a bad-ass because I could ride with no brakes at speeds of 20 mph to now oh man my goals grew and my strength and endurance and I now can hit speeds of 45 plus and keep steady at 25 to 30 without even changing my breathing.I have had some serious close calls with cars but the great experiences and the will to be able to come home everyday from work and still want to go out and do 50 to 60 miles on hills and through the streets and up hills most people wouldn't hit on road bikes (oooh I hate saying that word)I love to challenge myself and set and hit new goals. To sit at a signal with the cars I've just past and be in a track-stand position waiting for the light while a car full of people silently stare and just wonder makes me mash out and continue you on just to see the expression on those same faces at the next light. As far as the whole "what do you think of my bike or that bike or this color, I lift my leg and fart on all that crap. If anyone reads this that hasn't yet had these experiences my advice would be to get a Fixed bike respect it and ride it and always be careful cause people may stare when your sitting still but they dont ever look when they drive and if you don't believe me I'll take you by the ear to my friends graves and let you see what can happen for riding with your ass on your shoulders. ONE LOVE ONE GEAR ONE FIXED GEAR FAMILY WORLD WIDE" Thanks for reading, Nikko
Thanks for your Post Nikko. I have to say that at the moment I am still uncertain if to make my bike a Singlespeed (without having the hubsprocket fixed) or getting a fixed gear wheel... I am used to riding Singlespeed but fixed gear is a total new topic for me...Do you have any more advice?
Shark wen i built my bike i got a flip flop rear wheel, rode with the freewheel for a few weeks then decided what the hell i wanna learn to ride with the fixed gear so i flipped the wheel and pulled off the brakes. i never went back to the freewheel again. it is a totally diff experience, once u get used to it feels like when u were a lil kid riding around the neighborhood. no shifters, no brake levers, low tech, jus a seat a chain two wheels and a handlebar.

whether u wanna ride for speed, for distance, for tricks, or whatever, jus ride! dont let anyone diss u because u not doing wheelies or trackstands or spins or skidding around. jus learn the fixed gear (how to start and stop) and figure out what type of riding u wanna do.

try the fixed gear for a month and see how u like it. u wont be dissappointed.
Hi Shark welcome to ask of me anything you like when it comes to those questions.I've been a bike enthusiast for a long time and would love to help you make certain decisions with what you want to ride.I know there can be a lot of questions that come to mind with riding and I'm glad to help in anyway possible.Let me know!
Nikko
its fun like bamboo lol!
bambooooo is funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! me likey bamboooo
I ride my fixie because it looks cool and gives me some bad-ass cross-training on days when I dont feel like doing tricks on my BMX bike. Not to mention, it confuses all those spandex claud wheenies on their logo plastered $4000. road/mountain bikes. LOL.
