Why don't fixie riders use quick release wheels? I would imagine with a flip hub a with a quick release would be popular.

Also if you use a wheel with a flip hub is it important to get a rear tire with a non-directional tire tread?

very true on your tire tread theory,As far as quick release I can't really give you a answer for everyone but my opinion is I dont really trust them for the tension I produce on my gear ratio and riding style.

I agree with Nikko on the tension aspect. The anount of force required to produce a skid would have the axle slipping. Also, people with beer keg legs, like Nikko, pushing huge gear ratios would cause axles to slip aswell. On a last note, many urban types simply don't want their QR wheels stolen.

i belive it would be easer to get stolen i would also be afraid of it comming off

Beside the fact of having beer keg legs when to much torque is applied to quick release the side of hub that doesnt have chain on sprocket will gradually move forward making rim crooked and will rub on frame and then come disaster

ph nikko ur so modest lol

I had QR on mnt. and road bikes and never had one come off or loose. I did have a friend explode one. The threads sheared and the scewer shot off during a race. Thinking about the directional force, skidding would push the drive side backward and the non drive side forward. I stand corrected BKL. lol :)

Also it's part of the history of track riding. Before quick releases weren't as small as they were before, and they would stick out, therefore being a danger during a track race.

I also don't trust QR, however a friend of mine is riding fixed and hasn't had problems with the wheel slipping out of its dropouts.

Something else however: if you try to get a nice chain tension, it helps to be able to tighten the axle at each side, which is hard (impossible) to do with QR.

To sum up:

1. Tension

2. Anti-thievery

3. Looks
