What are you thoughts on cycle helmet wearing, I see loads of fixed riders with no skid lid me included, yet I always wear one on by geared bikes. Its probably because I don't go as fast or as far on the fixed and generally just ploding around or is it a fashion ting i don't know?

i would wear a helmet, except it doesnt feel right on a fixie for me, i dont know why :S
i'm in the market for a helmet now. looking more at a bmx style
I actually did wear my helmet the other day because out on busier road than usual, it wasn't that bad.
use a helmet for races or real sketcky riding ie. wrong way on one way, pressed with cars, anytime a collision is possible, got to admit tho i've never worn one
ive been having this debate with my self for a while now but the other day an old lady pulled out in front of me i just happened to have had to change to free gear earlier in the day because my lock nut fell off my fixed had i been on fixed it wouldnt have been pretty at all. so im gettin a helmet just got to find one i like
Hiya... I think it is funny that you would wear a helmet on your geared cycle but not on the fixie. I live in Adelaide, Australia, where it is not legal to ride without the skid lid. Therefore I always wear one...

Just one more thought on the crash thing and "not going too far" or "just to the corner store" mentality... most crashes happen within 5miles of home... where do you think you have MORE reason to wear your lid than for those short rides to the shops for milk?

Jus' sayin'.

I have been riding a fixed gear for a year and a half now. I never wore a helmet because it just didn't seem like the "thing to do" when on a fixed gear. I was told that people don't wear them for the cool factor. Many of my friends have given me crap for not wearing one. After hearing too many stories of people getting hit and severely injured or even killed, I finally gave in. A friend of mine gave me one of her skateboarding helmets and I decked it out with bicycle stickers. I may have a bucket on my head and messy hair BUT at least I will still have a head if i get hit. Very few riders in my community wear helmets so I am hoping that I can be one of those fixed gear riders to get a trend going.....
TRUE STORY
Was riding w/ two other folks the other day. Was yapping with the lady to my left, she was not paying attention & went down, the guy directly behind her crashed into her and flipped over. Split his helmet right down the middle, totally wiping it out. Without it he would have been in for a long hospital stay at best; dead or mentally impaired at worst. As it was we continued on our merry ride, thanks to a helmet.
